Early Intervention Program

Program Philosophy
  • DSC's Early Intervention program is committed to a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach. We consider all aspects of young children's development to be related.
  • We believe that our services can be most useful when we work together as a team with parents and caregivers.
  • For children with disabilities and delays, we believe that better lifetime outcomes can be achieved by early detection and treatment.
  • We believe parents should have choices about where their services are provided, and that parents know where their children feel most comfortable. Services can be provided in homes and daycares, or at the center.
  • We consider relationships with caregivers as the building blocks of development.

Program Components

Developmental Therapy
Developmental Therapy, provided by a Child Development Specialist, focuses on play skills, learning, and self-help skills. The Developmental Therapist can help with all areas of development by providing direct therapy or consulting with parents and caregivers.
Speech-Language Therapy
Speech Therapy, provided by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, assists with the development of language, sound production, feeding, swallowing and other oral motor concerns. Consultation or treatment may be sought when language is delayed, feeding or swallowing problems are noted, or when there are concerns about the facial and oral motor muscles.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy, for infants and young children, provides support for the development of fine motor (small muscle) activity and muscle tone, as well as providing assistance with sensory concerns. A parent, caregiver or physician may be alerted to sensory conditions when a child has sleeping or behavioral problems, irritability, lethargy or startles easily. Problems with balance and muscle tone (both high and low tone) would be treated by an Occupational Therapist as well.
Nursing
Nursing services include educational consultation, feeding and nutrition assistance, and developmental screening. The Registered Nurse provides services at the Center, or in the family's home or Daycare.
Family Support and Counseling
Family Support and Counseling services are provided to assist with social and emotional concerns. Services are provided to parents, children or families. Consultation may be sought when there are concerns or questions about behavior, siblings, losses, relationships, stress or crises.
Service Coordination
Service Coordination provides assistance understanding and location community resources, financial services, transitioning to the public schools, and problem solving. All families have a Service Coordinator as a resource.
Respite Services
Developmental Services Center, Family Development manages a Respite program for children under the age of 3 years. For children who qualify, some child care can be provided at no charge.
