The purpose of DSC Vocational Services is to assist adults with developmental disabilities in reaching their vocational potential by providing assessment, placement, training and supports in a variety of work settings. Although our primary service group is persons with a developmental disability, people with other diagnoses are served as resources permit. Referrals are made by the Office of Rehabilitation Services, other community agencies, and family members. A special area of focus is students nearing high school graduation who are in need of vocational support.
Four components comprise our Vocational Services Program:
Vocational Evaluation
Work Adjustment Training
Regular Work
Job Placement Program
Respite
The Respite Program is designed to provide short-term care for individuals with developmental disabilities. Families are eligible for up to 180 hours of respite care per fiscal year (dependent upon availability of respite providers and funding). These hours can be used in times of crisis, planned vacations or other situations where short-term care is needed. Services are provided in the home of the individual or the respite provider's home.
Vocational Evaluation
Vocational Evaluation provides an assessment of abilities, limitations and needs within the context of a work environment. Medical, psychological, social, educational, and other relevant information is considered during the evaluation for the purpose of providing recommendations for future placement and support.
Work Adjustment Training
Work Adjustment Training focuses on the attitudes and skills which will enable an individual to function at their highest potential in in-house or community employment. Emphasis in the development of positive work habits and skills as well as attention to work quality and speed provides the basis for all training. For individuals who have had limited job experience, this is a time to learn the basic habits necessary to successful employment.
Regular Work Program
The Regular Work Program provides an opportunity for continued employment for people who have completed the Work Adjustment Program, and choose to continue working at DSC while seeking a community job. It also provides employment for individuals who have significant barriers to employment, due either to disability or conduct. Individuals in the Regular Work Program are eligible for paid holiday and personal time. This time off accrues on a monthly basis.
Job Placement Program
Most people entering Vocational Services are interested in getting a job outside DSC. The purpose of the Job Placement Program is to provide employment based on the needs and abilities of the individual and to provide the training and support necessary for long term success. The degree of assistance provided is based on input from the individual and their employer. Follow-up support is provided in the least obtrusive manner possible. Sometimes a worker is integrated into the natural support and culture of the business, declares themselves independent, and no longer feels the need for DSC support. While this level of success is not uncommon, it is more typical for the individual and their employer to maintain regular contact with the Job Placement staff. The long term support is beneficial as new training opportunities arise, or when the individual wishes to expand or change jobs. In some situations, DSC supervises work crews established in various businesses. These sites offer community employment with full time DSC staff support.
