Meet Me on Monday 5-23-22
May is Better Speech & Hearing Month!
May is Better Speech & Hearing and Month. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize the outstanding professionals employed here at DSC, as well as throughout the community who work in the field of speech language pathology and audiology.
A national event, and awareness day, Better Speech & Hearing Month was founded by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) in 1927, to bring greater awareness about communication disorders and the need for interventions and supports when issues arise.
To prevent hearing loss, limit your exposure to loud noise. ASHA offers printables outlining safe listening guidelines for all ages: https://www.asha.org/siteassets/whd/2022/safe-listening-infographic.pdf
Reducing screen time may also be beneficial for children. Studies have shown that increased screen time may cause speech and developmental problems in children. ASHA provides handouts and printables for parents on Toddler Tech Time, as well: https://identifythesigns.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Be-Tech-Wise-With-Toddler.pdf
If you have any suspicions of speech delays in your child before the age of 3 years old, you can call the local Child & Family Connections #16 office for a free early intervention evaluation.
If you have concerns with your child’s hearing, families who live in Champaign County have access to free hearing testing done by pediatric audiologists through CASE Audiology.
DSC’s Family Development program also provides free developmental screenings:
