Speech Play Group Builds Communication Skills

Our Winter Words Speech-Language Group, led by Karissa Louthan, DSC Speech-Language Pathologist and Assistive Technology Specialist, recently completed it's 8-week session. The group made a lot of progress building communication skills over the course of eight weeks! Verbal language, gestures, sign language, and picture communication were all supported during the playgroup sessions.

Sarah Jones, the session's Speech-Language Pathology Intern, shared, "We used visual modeling and a lot of visuals to help promote language. We kept the same routine of having a book (story time) and a sensory activity, and I think with keeping the same routine and using the visuals, they were able to learn a lot of the language we were trying to build off of. It was really cool to see all of their progress.”

The Spring Speech Group has just started! Please reach out to Director of Family Development, Nicole Smith at nsmith@dsc-illinois.org or (217) 356-9176 for more information.
